Sywell Aviation Museum open for 2013
8th April 2013
30th March 2013 saw the Grand Opening of the Sywell Aviation Museum for this year's season. Despite snowy remnants on the ground a record crowd attended the free event which included military vehicles, re-enactors and cockpit-supremo Tony Collins' Hawker Hunter F.1 WT684 and EE Canberra B(1) 6 WT319 cockpits which he kindly brought along specially. The event saw the unveiling of a Roll of Honour and commemorative bench to mark the 70th anniversary of the deployment of the 20th Fighter Group, USAAF to Kingscliffe, Northants in March 1943. The Museum displays five very rare original mission 'ops' boards from the unit. Major Steven Gorman USAF Croughton attended to complete the unveiling which was marked with a minute's silence and bugler playing The Last Post.
The significance of the event was further marked in fine style by Peter Teichman displaying his wonderful North American P-51D 'Jumpin Jacques' 44-72035 (G-SIJJ) from the Hangar 11 Collection. Peter has been a kind supporter of the Museum for many years now and particularly with the 20th FG event planned was delighted to be able to bring an example of the unit's former 'mount' to pay his respects - the Museum is extremely grateful to him for braving the cold on Easter Saturday!
The Museum is now open every weekend and bank holiday from 10.30-16.30hrs until the end of September.
