Paul Morgan Display Hall - Grand Opening
26th April 2011
The grand opening of the new Paul Morgan Display Hall at the Sywell Aviation Museum took place on the 23rd April 2011. In glorious weather, the good folks of the Troops, Trucks and Stores Military Vehicle Group, supported by the Military Vehicle Trust and Pitsford Home Guard all attended to help the Museum open for its tenth season in style!
The star of the show was Peter Teichman who gave a very graceful display in his wonderful Hawker Hurricane to mark the occasion. The Hall was officially opened by the Mayor of Wellingborough, Councillor Lora Lawman and Mrs E.A. Morgan and is now fully open to the Public.
In addition, the Museum was recently able to exchange a Handley Page Hampden bomber wingtip held in its collection with the RAF Museum Cosford who are restoring a Hampden for display. Coming the other way was a German SC500 bomb, the type dropped on Wellingborough in the worst air raid in Northamptonshire's history in 1942.
16th April 2011 also saw the 7th annual reunion of the El Firdanians Association at Sywell Aerodrome. The organisation brings together former servicemen based in Egypt with the RAF during the Suez Crisis. The group presented a wonderful bespoke Tiger Moth model to Sywell Aviation Museum, entirely scratchbuilt by El Firdanian Ron Hewlitt, taking him over 500 hours to complete.
