Blakesley B-17 Memorial Service
15th October 2014
On 12th October 2014 a wartime tragedy which occurred some 70 years ago was commemorated at Woodend, Blakesley, Northants. On 11th October 1944, 3 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers from the 96th Bomb Group, Snetterton Heath, collided in bad weather over Northamptonshire whilst on a navigational exercise. 11 crewmen perished as two of the machines fell to earth near Woodend.
A memorial to the crash was erected in 2011 and the 70th anniversary commemorated by an excellent turn-out from the ACF, Royal British Legion, Military Vehicle Trust and Eighth Air Force Association. The USAF was represented by Col. Mellars of the 422nd Air Base Group, RAF Croughton, Northants. The remains of the aircraft following at 'dig' in 2010 are on display at Sywell Aviation Museum.
