London to Brighton Bike Ride 2012
8th June 2012
Following the death of Richard Watts, Chairman of the Sywell Aviation Museum, in November 2011 and his brother-in-law Brian Matthews in August 2011, friends and locals in The Griffin's Head, Mears Ashby suggested taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride in June 2012 in memory of them.
Friends who made the suggestion were adamant they wanted to support the Heart Foundation but also the Hannah Payne Memorial Trust and The Sywell Aviation Museum, both of which were very dear to the hearts of both men. To this end about twenty stalwarts will be riding the 54 miles on Sunday 17th June. As part of the training thirteen took part in the Waendel bike ride in May. Pretty good going as several of us had not been on a bike for many years.
Paul, Harry, and Tessa Watts form part of the 'A' team for this ride. No doubt both Richard and Brian will be looking down and saying we are mad! However, we are sure they will be there helping us to get to the end of the ride as they did with Minty when she ran her marathon in New Orleans in memory of them in March. The 'elite' riders will probably be quite merry by the time we finally arrive in Brighton!
We are grateful to all those who are helping us in this venture with bike transportation and support in every way.
However much or little we raise we know Richard and Brian would approve of the three causes the sponsorship is going to.
There is a fund raiser for the bike ride on the evening of 9th June at The Griffin in Mears Ashby, with barbeque, disco, auction and raffle. Miranda, who is arranging the ride, has obtained a signed football from Chelsea football club and also Manchester United, together with various other items. Miranda, her husband Phil, and Paul Dunphy are offering to be slaves for a day to the highest bidder. We are hoping it will be a good night!
